When manipulating images with Procreate, you’ll sometimes want to remove the background. You might have one of the various reasons for wanting to do this: the image would look better with a different background, you want to isolate an element to make it pop out more or you want to use it in another project.

How To Remove the Background in Procreate

Whatever the reason, removing the background in Procreate is relatively easy, although it may require some tinkering. This article will show you the essential steps for background removal using the app on both an iPad and with the Procreate Pocket version on iPhone.

How to Remove the Background of a Picture in Procreate on an iPhone

The methods for removing the background of a picture in Procreate Pocket will differ depending on the picture itself. In particular, the level of detail in the background, the size of the element you wish to isolate, and the contrast with the foreground will be crucial.

You’ll be able to apply one technique for photos with simple or blank backgrounds and larger, well-defined foreground elements that sharply contrast the background. However, the same technique won’t be good for pictures with complex backgrounds where elements blend in and have relatively low contrast.

An example of the former would be certain art, particularly drawings. For the latter, it would be photos, especially landscapes or nature pictures.

Let’s start with the method for simpler backgrounds.

Removing the Background Using Automatic Selection

To prepare your image for background removal, you’ll first need to create a new canvas. This is the most straightforward way to avoid complications with additional layers. Of course, after that, you’ll import the desired image to Procreate Pocket.

Once those basics are done, proceed onto these steps:

  1. Stretch the image over the entire canvas or as much as possible. This will make the rest of the process much easier. You can stretch images with the “Transform” tool, using the “Uniform” setting to avoid distortion.
  2. Select the “Selection” tool from the upper menu.
  3. Selection options will appear at the bottom. Tap on “Automatic.”
  4. With the automatic selection active, tap on the background. The background should change color, indicating it’s been selected. At this point, you’ll know whether automatic selection is the way to go. Note; If some of the foreground elements change color as well, you should opt for another technique.
  5. Adjust the selection sensitivity by dragging your finger right to increase it or left to decrease it. This will modify the selection threshold, i.e., what the automatic tool takes into consideration as background when selecting.
  6. Keep raising the threshold until the changed color starts seeping into the element you want to isolate. Then, reduce the threshold until the foreground object is completely clear. Don’t worry if the entire background isn’t selected at this point, as you can fix the remaining points later.
  7. Once you’re done adjusting the selection, go to the settings – located at the bottom – and tap “Invert.” As the name says, this will invert the selection to the foreground instead of the background.
  8. Copy and paste the selected element. It will be pasted automatically onto a new layer named “From selection.”
  9. In “Layers,” leave only the “From selection” layer checked to see the result. If all the foreground object is there, you can remove the original layer.
  10. Inspect the new image for leftovers of the original background. If there are any, use the eraser tool to simply delete those areas.

Once you complete these steps, the background from the picture will be gone, and you’ll only have the main foreground element on a blank background.

However, if during step 4 you saw that parts of the foreground were selected alongside the background, that probably means the picture is too complex or doesn’t have enough contrast. In that case, automatic selection won’t work, and you’ll need to use the manual method.

Removing the Background Using Freehand Selection

The freehand method will be more labor-intensive than the automatic selection approach. However, if automation fails, you’ll have no other choice than to separate the background and foreground by hand.

The same preparations will be needed here as for the automatic method. This will include creating a new canvas and importing a picture into it. Here’s how to proceed:

  1. As in the first method, stretch the image across the entire canvas.
  2. Tap on the “Selection” tool and choose “Freehand” from the bottom menu.
  3. Now the real work begins. You’ll need to trace the edges of the element you want to single out. As you draw around the shape, you’ll leave a dotted line behind. This line must be as close to the element edges as possible. If you can’t achieve pinpoint accuracy, it’s better to leave small parts of the background included with the selected area than to accidentally cut out pieces of the foreground element.
  4. Once you go all around the object, ensure that the final line is closed, i.e., that its start and end points touch.
  5. Copy and paste the selection to transport it to a new layer. This layer will be called “From selection.”
  6. Disable the original layer to see the result of your work. Ideally, the only thing present in the picture should be the selected foreground object.
  7. If there are parts of the background left, use the eraser to remove them from the final picture.

The aforementioned two methods will allow you to remove the background automatically. Note that the selection process might be manual, but the actual deletion will be automatic in either case. You can also use a third option that will include manual deletion.

Removing the Background Using Manual Deletion

Sometimes neither automatic nor freehand selection will be detailed enough to single out the tiniest parts of the picture element you want to remove. In that case, you could opt for a method that utilizes the “Eraser” tool.

This method doesn’t include particularly elaborate steps. You’ll simply need to select the eraser, resize it to fit the smallest detail, and get to work. It would be best to start with the smallest eraser size right at the edges of the object. Then, as you outline the foreground element, you can increase the size to cover a greater area to get rid of more of the background quickly.

When there’s no background directly around the element you want to use, you can also utilize the selection tools to get rid of the rest of the background.

How to Remove the Background of a Picture in Procreate on an iPad

Removing the background of a picture on an iPad will function much the same as on an iPhone. The methods will be identical, so we’ll use this section to reiterate the techniques:

  1. Automatic selection will help you select the entire background. You can then invert the selection to leave only the wanted element on a new layer. This method will work best for pictures with high contrast and relatively simple backgrounds.
  2. Freehand selection will require you to outline the object manually, creating a selection area. Once you do that, you can copy the selected element (no inversion required here) and paste it onto a new layer. This is a better approach for complex backgrounds or low-contrast pictures.
  3. Manual deletion means you’ll take the eraser tool and carefully delete the background around the element. Then, you can remove the rest of the background either by using a larger eraser size or by selecting, copying, and pasting. You should use this technique if the first two don’t produce satisfying results.

Single Out the Details You Want

Depending on the complexity of the picture, removing the background could be a very brief or quite long process. Either way, if you do it right, you’ll get the results you want.

Now that you know how to remove the background in Procreate, you can unleash your talent and pick and choose any elements you wish to remove from your pictures.

Did you manage to remove the background from your pictures? Which method did you use? Let us know in the comments below.

Method #1: Removing a Simple Block-Color Background

If you are trying to remove an object from an image with a simple solid background the process should be relatively simple for you.

This is because of Procreate’s awesome ‘Auto Selection’ tool which can be used to select entire objects or backgrounds in one simple click. In this example I will be removing a simple white background.

So, let’s learn how to make a background transparent together.

Step #1: Import Your Image

How to Remove Background in Procreate - Step #1 - Importing the Image

@rheatibbey

Select the ‘Actions’ menu found under the wrench icon and navigate to the ‘Add’ tab on the drop-down menu. Tap on ‘Insert a Photo’ and locate your desired image in your device’s camera roll. Resize the image to whatever you’d prefer then un-select it.

Step #2: The Automatic Selection Tool

Tap the Automatic Selection Tool in Procreate

@rheatibbey

Tap on the ‘Selection Tool,’ the S tape icon at the top of your screen. This should open up the selection tool interface and you should see a menu of different selection options at the bottom of your canvas.

Select ‘Automatic’ from the left-hand side of the menu. It should now appear in a bright blue to show it is activated.

Step #3: Adjust the Selection Threshold

Adjust the Selection Threshold

@rheatibbey

Your tool may automatically select your background, but in most cases you will need to slide one finger across your screen (left-to-right) to adjust the selection threshold.

You want to adjust it until you see all parts of the background become inverted in color, these inverted areas are the parts that the tool has selected.

Once your background has been fully selected, you will be ready to move onto the next step.

Step #4: Remove the Background

Invert the Selection

@rheatibbey

Now that you have selected your background, tap on ‘Invert’ from the selection tool menu. You should now be able to see that the colors of your subject have been inverted.

Tap on ‘Copy & Paste,’ this will create a new layer that contains your subject without its background.

Remove or Delete the Original Layer

@rheatibbey

Delete/hide your original image layer and you have successfully removed the background from your image!

You should be able to see a gray grid behind your image to show that it now has a transparent background.

Step #5: Save and Export Your Changes

Save and export to get the image with background removed

@rheatibbey

Your image is now ready to be used in your project or exported via the ‘Share’ subsection of the ‘Actions’ Menu (Wrench Icon).

If you decide to export your image at this stage, you should be presented with a range of file types to choose from including: Procreate, PSD, PDF, JPEG, PNG and TIFF.

Method #2: Manually Erasing the Background/ The Freehand Method

Sometimes ‘Auto-Selection’ is not going to be able to identify and select your background for you.

This can happen if your background is too complicated or there isn’t a clear distinction between your subject and their background.

Unlike in Adobe Photoshop, which has a lot more tools centered around photo-editing, when your image falls under this scenario in Procreate, the eraser tool might be your next best option.

So what is the best way to use the eraser tool to remove background elements?

Step #1: Import Your Image

How to Remove Background in Procreate - Step #1 - Importing the Image

@rheatibbey

Just as in the previous method, select the ‘Actions’ menu found under the wrench icon and navigate to the ‘Add’ tab on the drop-down menu.

Tap on ‘Insert a Photo’ and locate your desired image in your device’s camera roll. Resize the image to whatever you’d prefer then un-select it. Un-check the background layers box in the ‘Layers’ menu.

Step #2: Freehand Selection Tool

Use the freehand selection tool and draw a rough outline around the image

@rheatibbey

First tap on the ‘Selection’ tool to open up the selection menu. Select the ‘freehand’ tool from the options at the bottom of the screen.

Draw a rough outline with the selection tool around your subject. When the outline is complete tap on the ‘invert’ button and you should see some gray stripes covering your subject.

Swipe down on your screen with 3 fingers and you should see the ‘Copy, Cut and Paste’ pop-up menu. Select ‘Cut’ from the options and the bulk of your background should now be deleted.

Step #3: Manual Erasing

Once the bulk of the background has been removed you have two options: Manually erase it using the Eraser tool (set to a hard brush shape such as the round brush), or continue to use the Selection tool to remove the background in small, more precise chunks.

Both options give you the ability to work around a few minor details in your illustration.

Once you have removed the entire background you can export your file as a PNG with no background so it can be used as an asset later on, or just simply close your project file to save its progress.

What did you think of these different methods to remove background colors/elements?

How to Remove White Background of an Image on Procreate

Tap on your Selection tool (S icon) and choose Automatic. Tap and hold the white background of your image and slide until you achieve the Selection Threshold percentage that you want. Then tap Invert and then select Copy & Paste.

I’m Carolyn and my digital illustration business has been relying on my knowledge of Procreate for over three years. Therefore it is my full-time job to know the ins and outs of this incredible and complex drawing app that we call Procreate.

I’m not going to lie, this was not one of the first things I learned on Procreate in the beginning. Yes, I spent too many hours hand-erasing the background from images instead. But today, I’m going to show you how to do it automatically so you don’t have to follow in my footsteps.

Note: Screenshots are taken from Procreate on iPadOS 15.5.

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

  • There are three ways to remove the white background from an image in Procreate.
  • Using the Selection tool on the Automatic setting will remove the white background quickly.
  • You will need to touch up the edges after you have removed the background.
  • The better quality of the image you use with as few shadows as possible will have the best results.
  • You can use the same methods listed below for Procreate Pocket.

3 Ways to Remove White Background of an Image in Procreate

There are three ways to remove the white background of an image in Procreate. The common way is to invert selection and use the Eraser Tool to clean up. Alternatively, you can directly use the Eraser or Freehand Selection Tool.

Method 1: Invert Selection

This is a very elaborate process so make sure you follow these steps slowly and carefully.

Step 1: Ensure your inserted image is the active layer in your canvas. Tap the Selection tool (S icon). In the bottom toolbar, select the Automatic option.

Step 2: Hold your finger or stylus on the white background of your image. Slowly slide it to the left or right until you achieve your desired Selection Threshold percentage. Keep adjusting until the majority of the white background is gone.

Step 3: For gaps or blocked-out shapes of white background, repeat this step except hold your finger or stylus down on the gap you are trying to remove.

Step 4: Once you are happy with the amount of white background removed, tap Invert at the bottom of the canvas. Your image will be highlighted in blue.

Step 5: Tap Copy & Paste at the bottom of your canvas. Your new selection will be moved to a new layer and the old layer will remain. Now you can choose to delete the original layer to save space in your canvas if you want.

Step 6: Now it’s time to clean up your image. You will notice a faint white line around the edge of where you removed the background. You can use your Eraser tool to manually clean up these edges until you’re happy with the result.

Pro Tip: Deactivate the background of your canvas while you’re doing this process it is clearer to see the edges of your image.

If you don’t like this genius tool and prefer to complete this process manually, there are two alternative ways to remove the background of an image on Procreate.

Method 2: Eraser Tool

You can use the Eraser tool to manually remove the edges of an image in Procreate by hand. This is very time-consuming but some people may prefer it for its precision. I personally like to combine this method with the Selection tool method listed above.

Method 3: Freehand Selection Tool

You can use the method above but instead of selecting the Automatic option, you can use the Freehand tool and manually draw around the outline of your object. This is my least favorite method as it means you cannot lift your stylus and it must be one continuous line.

Video Tutorial: If you’re more of a visual learner, I found this awesome tutorial video from Make It Mobile on Youtube which breaks it down clearly.

Pro Tip: You can also use this method to remove the white background from text images too.

There are quite a few frequently asked questions regarding this method so I have briefly answered a few of them below.

How to remove the image background in Procreate Pocket?

You can follow the same method above to remove a background in Procreate Pocket. Tap on the Modify button in order to access the Selection tool in the app.

How to remove objects from photos in Procreate?

You can use the same method as above to do this except instead of tapping and swiping on the white background of the image, you will tap and swipe on the object you want to remove from the photograph.

How to make an image transparent in Procreate?

Be careful not to mix the two of these up. Removing the background of an image is different from saving an artwork with a transparent background. To make an image transparent, tap on the Background to deactivate it in your work before saving it.

Can I remove the white background from an image without Apple Pencil?

Yes, you can. It won’t make a difference if you use a stylus or your finger for the Selection tool method listed above. However, if you are using either of the manual methods then this will be way more time-consuming to do so without a stylus or Apple Pencil.

Conclusion

Yes, this method is intimidating. It even took me months to even attempt it. It also greatly depends on the quality of the image you use as this will make the outcome better and require fewer touch-ups after the fact.

This is another cool trick that changed the game for me. Even if it doesn’t come out perfect, just removing the larger white areas of an image in seconds will speed up your design process immensely. I recommend learning how to use this tool as soon as possible!

Do you use this method for removing the white background from images in Procreate? Leave a comment below and let me know how it works for you.
