How can I check what version/edition of Visual Studio is installed programmatically?
I could read registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0 . However, it doesn’t give me any information about the edition of it — Professional/Ultimate or whatever.
How can I get the information with programmatically (preferably python)?

In Visual Studio, the Tab ‘Help’-> ‘About Microsoft Visual Studio’ should give you the desired infos.
You can get the VS product version by running the following command.
![]()
Open the installed visual studio software and click the Help menu select the About Microsoft Visual studio—> Get the visual studio Version
![]()
if somebody needs C# example then:
Run the path in cmd C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\Installer>vswhere.exe
Its not very subtle, but there is a folder in the install location that carries the installed version name.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition — ENU
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Professional — ENU
You could find the install location from the registry keys you listed above.
Alternatively this will be in the registry at a number of places, eg:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\Setup\Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition — ENU
There are loads of values and keys with the string in, you can find them by looking for «Microsoft Visual Studio 2010» in the Regedit>Edit>Find function.
You’d just need to pick the one you want and do a little bit of string matching.
How to get Visual Studio 2017 version number and edition
![]()
If you try to find information on the exact version of Visual Studio 2017 installed on your machine you might be confused by what you find when you look at the programs and features dialog.
First, you might expect a more detailed display name which also names the edition (like Professional or Enterprise). Next, if you know the version numbers from the past you might expect to see a number starting like “15.x.y.z” instead of “1.x.y.z” — after all Visual Studio 2015 had version numbers starting with “14.x.y.z” so a simple increment seems obvious. Instead you see something like “1.x.y.z”.
It’s important to understand that the entry shown in the screenshot above relates to the installer of Visual Studio 2017 and not to Visual Studio 2017 itself. The installer of Visual Studio 2017 can typically be found in %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Visual Studio\Installer .
Why is that? You might have noticed already that the overall installation experience of Visual Studio has changed dramatically with Visual Studio 2017 allowing not only very slick and quick installations but also side-by-side instances of Visual Studio 2017 . (See also this post.) These new capabilities lead to described behavior.
In case you need to find out the version number of Visual Studio on a PC programmatically there are two ways recommended.
Check visual studio and visual studio code version and edition

When you want to run or install certain software, the documentation may suggest that you check the software’s version because some software is dependent on OS and system requirements, CPU frequency, and supported architectures.Visual Studio 2012, for example, is only supported on Windows 7 and later. As a result, knowing it is important.
